Crochet Fusion Cushion
This cushion cover is a fusion of patchwork and crochet – a quick and effective method of making a stunning cushion.
The cushion front is made separately and then attached to a basic cushion cover in toning fabric
To make the cushion, you will need:
Square cushion pad (I used an 18")
1 fat quarter of patterned fabric that will be the squares on the front
2 fat quarters of fabric for the basic cushion in toning shades
Sharp darning needle
100g ball cotton crochet yarn in complimentary colour
3.00 mm crochet hook
You will need to know:
Crochet stitches – double crochet (dc), treble crochet (tr), shell stitch (6 tr in one stitch)
Blanket stitch
Use a sewing machine.
Step 1 Make you basic cushion cover
Measure you cushion and add 2.5 cm seam allowance all round. Cut your cushion front to this size.
Put the front and the back right side together and pin. Sew all round the edge with a 2.5.cm seam. Cut the corners and turn right side out. You know have a cushion cover with a centre opening.
Use the overlap to attach a fastening – snaps, velcro or buttons
I used Velcro fastening but attached fabric covered buttons as a decoration.
Now to make the cushion front:
Cut your fabric into 4" (10cm) squares, turn over a 0.5cm seam. Hem the squares.
With a sharp darning needle and you cotton crochet thread, blanket stitch evenly all round the square.
Now for the crochet.
Starting at one corner, *21 dc evenly along one edge, 2 ch* repeat for all sides. Join with ss.
3ch (counts as tr) 2tr in next 2 stitches, ch 1, miss next st, *3tr in next 3 stitches ch1 miss next st* repeat until corner, 2 tr 1ch 2tr in corner chain**. Repeat from* to** three times. Join with ss to 3rd of three chain.
Dc along edge with 2dc 1 ch 2dc in corner space. Fasten off.
Repeat for all 9 squares.
Join squares with a dc seam. Place 2 square right sides together, dc on corner space pf both square and then dc along through both squares. Repeat until you have 3 strips of 3, then join the 3 strips in the same way until you have all 9 joined.
Attach the yarn to one corner space of your large square, 1 tr in each dc along the side, 2tr 2ch 2tr in each corner. The cushion front should now be the same size as the cover.
Create the shell border. This will overlap the cushion. Starting at the first tr, miss 2 st, 6 tr in next stitch (shell formed) miss 2 st dc in next stitch. Repeat this pattern until the corner is reached. 8 tr in corner space. Continue until shell pattern is all round the edge.
Pin the front onto the cover so that the shell border overlap and pin in place. Handstitch the front to the cushion cover.
Place the cushion pad in the cover and voila!
